Kerry White

“Each day is a new adventure, filled with surprise and an opportunity to live life to its fullest. Diabetes can be an inspiration, not a burden – it is what you make it.”

From the time she was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, Kerry White has been conquering the odds. Only 11 years old, she lay semi-comatose in a hospital bed, her veins so constricted that doctors could barely insert lifesaving IVs into them.

A quarter century later, little has changed. White, a native of Australia, has twice been a winner in the Race Across America’s four-woman team division. Last year, she tackled the solo division and was the only woman – and first person with diabetes – to complete the 3,044-mile transcontinental bicycle race. Consider the magnitude of the accomplishment: In its history, In its history, fewer people have completed RAAM than have scaled Mount Everest.

“Being a diabetic is a constant challenge,” she says. “But I thrive on challenges!”
