Matt Wilson

Matt Wilson has fought – and won – a bigger battle off the bike than he ever has in the saddle.

Just as he was coming up through the cycling ranks, Wilson was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease, a cancer that attacks the lymph glands. For the next two years, he successfully battled the disease.

When Wilson bravely returned to the sport in 2001, it was almost as if he had never been away from cycling. He finished third in his first race, the Skilled Bay Criterium Series, then nearly won the Australian national road championship, getting caught only three miles from the finish while still managing to finish third.

Wilson would twice go on to compete in cycling’s greatest race, the Tour de France. Although an asthma attack on Stage 12 prevented him from finishing the race in 2003, he did finish the race in 2004 (144th place). He considers his victories in the 2004 Australian national road race and the 2007 Herald Sun Tour to be career highlights.

Although he has raced professionally for seven seasons, this will be his first time living and racing in the United States.
